Here is a huge event for those who dreamed of seeing Hyrule in live action. Nintendo has just shared on X (formerly Twitter) the very first images of The Legend of Zelda movie.

While the setting of this adaptation remains quite mysterious for now, we can already confirm that it will hit theaters on May 7, 2027. Yes, that is very precise.

Production: Nintendo and Sony team up

As confirmed by Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the franchise, filming is finally on track. As a reminder, this is a large-scale project, with Avi Arad as producer and Wes Ball directing. A name that might not ring a bell, but who was behind the very nice Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes as well as the Maze Runner trilogy.

Ironically, the film is co-financed by the Kyoto firm to the tune of over 50% as well as by Sony Pictures Entertainment, which will also handle distribution. It just goes to show that sometimes you have to bury the hatchet.

Mysterious Script and 5-Star Casting

We are going back over these technical details because, for the rest, Nintendo has remained strangely silent. We do not know if the film will be based on a specific episode, or even if it will try to aim for a more original plot. And for a series that has accustomed us to games so different from one another, this lack of precision is rather surprising.

Regardless, we can already say that Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (in the role of Link) and Bo Bragason (in that of Zelda) are particularly faithful to their models. We notice the hero’s iconic green outfit, very typical of Ocarina of Time / Twilight Princess; and on the princess’s side, the blue fabrics (with a Triforce pattern!) evoke the episodes Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

A Visual Style Straddling Eras

This leads us to think that the feature film will mix several iconic elements of the saga, without necessarily venturing towards the less conventional entries. In any case, that is what we can deduce from the last image which shows a quite bucolic green plain, far from evoking the hallucinated landscapes of Termina (Majora’s Mask) or the Great Sea (The Wind Waker).

In short, while waiting for the next big announcements, all guesses are allowed. And in case you want a little extra Triforce, this is the opportunity to point out that Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment has been available on Switch 2 since last November 6th. A perfect spin-off to wait until the first trailer for the film.
